Startuper of the year award- Total Ethiopia

The Startupper Challenge in nearly 60 countries around the world. This Challenge targets every young local entrepreneur with an innovative project or idea that could make things change in their country. The local jury in each country nominates three winners that receive financial and coaching support for their project.

“Solve IT!” Innovation award by Icog Labs

The recently launched nationwide innovation competition aims to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship targeting young Ethiopians with in the age group of 18-30. The contestants are expected to work for 9 months to develop products that they believe will tackle key problems faced in their community through mobile applications and hardware solution. Trainings on product development and business and marketing are provided in the hubs established in the 9 regions and 2 city administrations. . Winners at regional level advance to National round for a week long competition before a jury of industrial experts. US Embassy Ethiopia has funded the first award in 2018.

In the first round of the competition over 1,600 young Ethiopian innovators have participated, leading to the development of 85 innovative and marketable tech products and services with 3 winners receiving financial support to realise their innovative ideas.

After passing through first phase of screening, 200 teams strive for the final round. Selected 50 contestants receive training on prototyping by International experts. Top 10 projects get the opportunity to mass manufacture in Shenzhen.

Slush Global Impact Accelerator competition (Global Competition)

Slush is an annual competition attended by over 2,500 startups and 1,200 investors annually.

Read about Christian Tesfay, the first Ethiopian to win the award from Ethiopia He founded an agri-tech firm called GebeyaNet Technologies. Selected from among 1,400 global applicants, GebeyaNet, won a grand prize of five thousand Euros.

Social Entrepreneurs of the Year

Organised by The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, the award is designed to encourage leaders at the helm organisations pioneering solutions for social and environmental challenges.
